Dr Ian Jones OBGYN Obstetrician is located in Medindie on the fringe of Adelaide, providing complete obstetric services. These services are conducted both in our rooms and also through the Calvary and Burnside hospitals. Dr Jones obstetric services cover prenatal care, advice and helping patients through their whole pregnancy all the way to the birth of their child.

Obstetrician Adelaide


We provide a complete obstetric service starting from prenatal care and advice and helping patients achieve pregnancy. Continuous care is provided throughout your pregnancy with 24 hour access for any problems or advice. Dr Jones will see you at each visit and mange your care, however if other specialist involvement is required he will arrange for this to be organised immediately by the practice staff. Dr Jones performs an Ultra sound scan at every visit, however you will also have formal Ultrasounds arranged at the best obstetric ultrasound service in the state. We have access to the most respected Paediatricians to assess your newborn and our anaesthetic service, should you require it is arguably the best available.

Obstetric Appointment Schedule

No two pregnancies are the same and the exact number of appointments and their nature will vary from patient to patient. However the following appointment schedule will give you some idea of what to expect.

Appointment 1

  • Patients are initially seen at approximately 9 weeks for a 45 minute appointment
  • A dating ultrasound is carried out and pictures are saved to a USB.
  • A full medical and social history is taken
  • A full medical examination is performed.
  • Routine investigations are organised including blood tests and Down syndrome screening.
  • Medications for morning sickness etc are prescribed if needed
  • The appointment concludes with discussion about pregnancy do’s and dont’s and measures to promote a healthy lifestyle

Appointment 2

14 weeks

  • Dr-Ian-Jones-UltrasoundUltrasound is carried out and occasionally sex determination is possible with pictures saved to USB
  • Pregnancy symptoms and effects of treatment are reviewed
  • Results of investigations are discussed and further tests organised if required.

Appointment 3

  • 20 weeks
  • Results of the formal morphology scan are discussed.
  • Review of pregnancy symptoms or issues
  • BP check and small ultrasound check of baby.

Appointment 4

  • 24 weeks
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Review of symptoms and any issues
  • Abdomen measured and BP checked.
  • 28 week investigations organised

Appointment 5

  • 28 weeks.
  • Review 28 week investigations including Diabetes test Complete blood picture and antibodies.
  • Ultrasound review of baby with photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Administer Anti D if required

At 30 weeks a non compulsory bulk billed 1 hour education session is available with our Midwife Donna Mansell  at the rooms.

Appointment 6

  • 32 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Occasionally extra formal ultrasound scan to check placental position  or fetal kidneys is carried out at this stage.

Appointment 7

  • 34 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Repeat Anti D if indicated.
  • Discuss signs of labour

Appointment 8

  • 36 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Discuss birth process and wishes of patient and partner.

Appointment 9

  • 37 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Low vaginal swab taken for GBS screening

Appointment 10

  • 38 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Discuss results of GBS screen
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement and signs of engagement
  • A vaginal examination and cervical assessment is carried out for patients anticipating a vaginal birth

Appointment 11

  • 39 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement and signs of engagement
  • Initial or repeat vaginal examination if required

Appointment 12

  • 40 weeks
  • Review any problems experienced
  • Ultrasound review of baby and photos saved to USB
  • Check BP and abdominal measurement
  • Initial or repeat Vaginal examination if required.
  • Discuss patients wishes regarding possible induction if remains undelivered.

High risk obstetrics obstetric patients may be seen more frequently initially and have more frequent appointments throughout the pregnancy. Any extra appointments are automatically bulk billed.

Approximately 6 weeks after delivery Dr Jones looks forward to welcoming you to the rooms for your Post Natal Visit.
